Uganda commemorated the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) on 1st October 2025 at St. John Secondary School Playground in Jinja District.

The celebrations were held under the theme “Enhanced Household Incomes: A Key to Dignity and Respect for Older Persons.” The event was presided over by the Vice President of Uganda, accompanied by ministers responsible for older persons and disability affairs.

Leaders emphasized that income security is central to the dignity, independence, and wellbeing of older persons. According to the 2024 National Population Census, older persons constitute approximately 5% of Uganda’s population, many of whom face poverty and social exclusion.

The commemoration highlighted government efforts toward social protection, economic empowerment, and inclusion of older persons in national development programs.
