National Women Council

Overview

The National Women Council (NWC) is the statutory national structure through which women’s voices, priorities, and representation are organized from community level to national level. It provides a platform for women to participate in leadership, community development, and governance, while strengthening unity and collective action among women across Uganda.

Legal basis

Established under the National Women’s Council Act (Cap. 318).

Core purpose
  1. Organize and unify women for participation in development and governance.

  2. Promote women’s leadership, participation, and empowerment through structured representation.

Structure and coverage
NWC is designed to operate through council structures at multiple levels, ensuring that women’s issues are raised from the grassroots up to the national platform, and that communication flows both ways (community ↔ national).
